Terms and conditions of English Heritage Trust membership
For the purposes of these Terms and Conditions, “English Heritage” means The English Heritage Trust, a charity caring for the National Heritage Collection of more than 400 historic properties and their collections. The English Heritage Trust is incorporated and registered in England and Wales with company number 07447221 and charity number 1140351 and whose registered office is at Engine House, Firefly Avenue, Swindon, SN2 2EH
These are the terms and conditions applicable to members of English Heritage ("Terms"). In these Terms, "you/r" refers to the member of English Heritage (or applicant for such status), and "we" and "us" refers to English Heritage ("EH").
In the event of any conflict between these Terms and Conditions and vendor Terms and Conditions, these Terms and Conditions shall prevail.
General Terms
Benefits of being a member
1. As a member you are entitled, upon presentation of a valid membership card, to free entry to EH properties during normal opening hours and subject to the usual conditions of entry and the exceptions listed in clause 4.
2. Additional membership benefits such as entry into other historic properties in the UK and abroad are set out in the Members' Handbook, the Members' Magazine and/or on the EH website.
3. With the exception of entitlement to free entry to EH properties in accordance with clause 1, we reserve the right to change any membership benefits without prior notice for any reason.
Events / Exceptions
4. (a) Being a member does not entitle you to free entry at ticketed events held at an EH property, nor does it guarantee the availability of tickets to any such events.
4. (b) Opening times may also vary when a public or private event is held at an EH property. It is advisable to contact the property before travelling.
Term*
5. Membership is valid for twelve consecutive months. Subject to clause 6, if you cancel or are unable to use your membership at any stage during this time refunds or extensions will not be offered in any circumstances and any outstanding balance will be payable in full.
Refund Policy
6. Where you apply for EH membership (either in person at an EH site or via online application or by telephone) you have a legal right to change your mind within 14 days of the date of application and receive a refund of membership fees paid; provided that if you have visited any EH paying site(s) within that period you shall be liable to pay the applicable entry fees in respect of such visit(s). Please note no refunds will be given for memberships bought via third parties, or for any redeemed Gift of Memberships. To request a refund please notify the Membership Department by telephone, letter or email (the contact details for which are shown in clause 20) within 14 days after joining/receiving your temporary membership cards. No refunds will be issued after this time.
Your Donation and Gift Aid
7. In purchasing an EH membership, you are making a charitable donation to English Heritage which allows us to fulfil our charitable aims as an organisation.
8. When purchasing a membership, you may choose to apply Gift Aid to your donation. Gift Aid allows us to claim up to 25p of every £1 you give us at no extra cost to you. By choosing to Gift Aid you are confirming you are UK taxpayer and understand that if you pay less Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all donations in the tax year it is your responsibility to pay any difference. You are also acknowledging that the membership you are purchasing is for yourself and/or members of your family.
Membership application process
9. Memberships (new and renewals) may take up to 28 days from receipt to process and membership materials will be posted to you by second class post. Please contact the EH customer services team if you have not received them within 42 days of your application. We will not be able to grant a refund or extension if you fail to inform us of non-receipt after this time.
Membership cards
10. Memberships, membership cards and/or any associated benefits are non-transferable and can only be used by the named member(s). Proof of identity may be requested on presentation of your membership card at EH properties.
11. Members who are unable to show a valid membership card on entry may be required to pay a non-refundable entrance fee before they are admitted.
12. Lost or stolen membership cards will be replaced free of charge in the first instance. In all cases, the minimum time taken for replacement cards to be dispatched is 5 working days.
Monthly payment
13. If a member paying by monthly Direct Debit falls behind with payment, we reserve the right to refuse entry, to revoke membership and seek the outstanding balance.
Changes in membership category**
14. If you wish to make changes to your membership category during the course of your current subscription, for instance from joint to single, please do so in your Members' Area or contact us. This will be reflected in your next renewal and no refunds will be issued. If you pay by monthly Direct Debit, you are unable to remove anyone from your membership until your renewal is due.
15. You may request to change the name of the other person on your membership by completing a change request form.
16. If you wish to add a member, to change from a single to joint membership, we will ask you to pay the difference and issue the new cards.
17. If you’d like to make any changes to your membership when due for renewal, please contact us before the 18th of the month prior to month of your membership renewal.
Membership renewals**
18. We will contact you approximately one month before your membership is due for renewal, detailing the expiry date of your current membership and any further actions you may need to take in order to continue your subscription.
19. If your membership subscriptions are paid by Direct Debit, we will automatically renew your membership after 12 months and collect the monies for the coming subscription period unless you notify us that you do not wish to renew your membership by the date stated in your renewal letter.
Promotions
20. Offers and discounts cannot be used in conjunction with any other promotions or with the monthly Direct Debit payment option.
Further Considerations
21. We reserve the right to refuse entry and/or membership and/or to revoke membership without refund if the member behaves in a threatening and/or abusive manner towards any person at any EH property, or damages or threatens to damage any of the collections or property of EH, or acts in a manner which could bring EH into disrepute.
22. We reserve the right to revoke your membership at any time, without financial compensation, if you commit any breach of these Terms.
23. We may from time to time change, alter, adapt, add or remove sections of these Terms and Conditions. If we do make any changes these will be posted to this website.
24. All personal data provided to English Heritage shall be held and processed in accordance with the requirements of all legislation and regulatory requirements in force from time to time relating to the use of personal data, including the Data Protection Act 2018 (DPA 2018), the UK GDPR (which has the meaning given to it in section 3(10) (as supplemented by section 205(4)) of the DPA 2018), the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (SI 2003/2426) as amended, applicable guidance and codes of practice issued by the Information Commissioner’s Office and English Heritage’s Privacy Policy. We will keep your personal data safe and secure. We will not share it with other organisations without your knowledge and consent, unless required by law to do so.
25. None of the Terms shall be enforceable under the Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 1999 by a party other than you or English Heritage.
26. These Terms and Conditions and any dispute or claim (including non-contractual disputes or claims) arising out of or in connection with them or their subject matter or formation shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales.
