Romans descend on Hadrian's Wall for weekend of Battle

  • Roman and Barbarian re-enactors stage full weekend of performances
  • New Barbarian Night Attack introduces atmospheric ritual after dusk

Following the huge popularity of last year's event, over 100 legionaries from across Europe will again make their way to Hadrian's Wall this September for two days of spectacular invasions, battles and rituals. Hadrian's Wall Live, taking place on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 September, will include the re-enactment of a clash between Roman soldiers and barbarians at Birdoswald Roman Fort on Saturday. Then, at Housesteads Roman Fort later the same evening, there is the opportunity to experience the unique sights and sounds of a Roman legion at dusk in the Night Time Patrol.

New for 2016

For the first time, Hadrian's Wall Live will feature the new Barbarian Night Attack, held after usual closing time at Birdoswald Roman Fort. From 8.30pm on Saturday 3 September, a re-enactment featuring 85 Roman and Barbarian performers will recreate an ancient religious ceremony in the illuminated arena. The day's dramatic culmination is an interpretation of battle, kidnap and pagan ritual, set in atmospheric surroundings, and is sure to be a highlight of the weekend.

Explore Roman Life

Throughout the day at Birdoswald, families can enjoy Roman falconry displays, theatre performances, regular gladiatorial combat, sword drills for the children to take part in, and even chariot racing. Visitors are also free to explore Roman, Barbarian and Civilian camps, asking questions of the residents and witnessing Roman life in action through living history displays.

Carl Hutton, Events Manager in the North for English Heritage said:

"Last year's event on Hadrian's Wall was such a phenomenal success that we're thrilled to be hosting it again this year. We'll be bringing Hadrian's Wall to life by staging a Roman invasion and visitors can see how life on the edge of the empire would have been centuries ago as they witness battles and explore camps, taking in the sights and sounds of this mighty force.

This is the last weekend before the kids go back to school, so we're inviting families along for one last memorable summer weekend."

Hadrian's Wall Live! takes place on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 September 2016.
