Aydon is thought to be one of the least-altered examples of a fortified medieval manor house in England. Begun in the late 13th century, Aydon was progressively turned into a miniature castle as Anglo-Scottish border warfare grew fiercer. The castle was attacked at least three times by Scots raiders.
Inside Aydon Castle, there's a hall, chambers and plenty more rooms to explore. Look out for original fireplaces, a garderobe toilet and other medieval features. Then head up to the battlements before enjoying a picnic in the pretty walled orchard.
Aydon is a short drive away from Corbridge Roman Town and Chesters Roman Fort, and less than a mile from the Hadrian's Wall Trail.
