Portchester Castle is a medieval fortress, built within the walls of a Roman fort, at the north end of Portsmouth Harbour. Its extensive history can be traced back to the 3rd century AD, when the Romans built an enormous fort here. Six hundred years later, the castle became a prisoner-of-war camp, growing to hold up to 8,000 prisoners from around the world. Use our resources and suggested activities to discover the important role the castle has played in local, national and international histories.
