Members' Week:

12th Century Monks – Selfless or self-indulgent?

DATE

Sun 11 May 2025

TIME

12pm - 1.15pm

LOCATION

Byland Abbey

SUITABLE FOR

Adults

Were the monks devoting themselves to prayer to save their own souls, or those of others? Why did they need such such huge buildings? Were the lay brothers grateful for the shelter and security provided? Was there an intention to redistribute the wealth they produced? Was their introduction into the local culture resented or welcomed? Was the gift of land a payment to protect the spiritual future of the nobility?

Our volunteer guide will answer these questions and more all in the beautiful setting of Byland Abbey.

This event has been graded as moderate access due to uneven terrain with few places to stop and sit.
